Default Work from home...not for dial-up users

Hi.

When I first started using the Internet a little over 8 years ago, I only used it for "fun" things like chat, games, and e-mail. As time went on and I discovered that there were legitimate WAH opportunities (mainly writing for me), I began to use the dial up ISP more and more each day, which was a bit of a struggle since I am not the only one who lives in my house and at the time we had no back up cell phone to use when I tied up the phone line.

Now, this may not be news to experienced WAH workers, but nowadays it is crucial to have at least DSL service (cable is better, but it's pricier) as a way to connect to the net.

What is the predominant hi-speed connection among us? Cable or DSL? And how has getting a hi-speed provider helped forum members cope with the demands of a WAH job?

I use DSL for my connection and I need it because I am in college and need to be able access my class programs. However, with working from home I have found that it is needed in order to work quickly. With Dial-up it takes a long time to do a process and the company needs you to be efficient.

I have gotten so used to my DSL connection that I can't imagine how I ever survived without it. Yet, until I started spending more time online for work, I muddled through with my dial-up. Obviously, I had different needs back then!

Depending on where in the world your are (UK!) and which supplier you go for, you might be better of getting a Cable connection (depending on availability). There are lots of "cheap" ADSL Suppliers, but they sign up so many people that the connection can become over subscribed and you end up paying for a connection speed your never actually going to get!!!

Just my 2pence!

Hi,

I too used to have Dial Up, mostly just for fun but when I started my internet business, it coincided with me getting ADSL broadband ( UK ) and living near to an exchange I can get 6 - 8 Mb speed which is plenty for me but is classed as slow I would imagine in some parts of the world who are talking about 25Mb and 50Mb and more which is mind boggling.

I can't imagine how I could possibly run my business with Dial Up as it was so slow and frustrating and from a business point of view it would be useless because it would disable my telephone.

I read a post recently in another forum about saturation point on the Internet which was just about laughed off the forum because with faster speeds, more trade being done every week and more people coming onto the Internet, we are still in the early days of trading in my opinion and more and more companies are committing large advertising budgets to the medium and they wouldn't do that it the Internet wasn't thriving.

success to you all,

Mal.
